Spreading awareness, One step at a time

Washington, D.C. - Students have scheduled lunches on each day. Just think about it, waking up in the morning missing out on breakfast and dying to eat something. Standing in the line patiently one behind the other with the thought of food on your mind. Although many refuse to eat the lunch, the nutrients in it supports Healthy Eating.

“Lunch use to be the total package. From Strawberry milk to Tater tots, but little do everyone know it tortured the body.” said Healthy Eating Personnel, Kenneth Jackson.

The body needs a certain amount of energy (calories) from food to keep up basic life functions. Over time, when people eat and drink more calories than they burn, the energy balance tips towards weight gain and obesity. This is known as energy imbalance.

“I gain weight very easily because I eat whatever I want without exercising.” 11th grade, Miara Bonner an inactive teen reported.

New school lunches include more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low fat milk, dairy products and less sodium and fat. The portions to be served are determined by grade, and Body Mass Index (BMI).

Statistics show that more than 53% of high school students are obese and they never had a clue. The Healthy Eating organization made it their business to make a difference within the dieting in children’s meals across the United States.

“We found that strong state laws for school meals, such as those that call for a specific amount of changes to the food, have the potential to help reduce obesity rates. It confirms what we've learned from many other studies, that offering healthy school foods is an important strategy for reversing the childhood obesity epidemic." said Dan Taber, PhD, MPH.
